Fishbowls Overnight
We will be doing a backpacking overnight trip into Fishbowls camp. This is a recon trip with minor tread work. We will carry a shovel and a hoe for the crew and perhaps a pair of loppers. We need multiple vehicles because we will be starting at the Cedar Creek TH and exiting at the Fishbowls TH.

This will be a recon trip to assess and gather vital information on what maintenance activities need to happen on the Thorn Point Trail in the Sespe Wilderness. Nelder Grove
With sufficient volunteers, one team will hike one trail with hand tools, the other with the chainsaw.Nelder Grove will not be open to the public. We have a gate key, so we will meet and then caravan into the grove. If there are fallen trees on the road we will stop and clear them off.
All volunteer should bring eye protection (plastic sunglasses will work if you don't have safety glasses) and leather/work gloves.
Day packs, snacks, lunch and your 10 essentials are necessary.

Trail scouting - Lewis Creek and Nelder Grove
We will be heading up to scout trails. This is a good weekend for anyone who isn't sure they are up to the work of maintaining trails, to get an idea of how volunteer trail crew works.One team will be dropped off at the northern trailhead for Lewis Creek and hike the length of the trail to the bottom, to be picked up by the other team after they have scouted the Shadow of the Giants trail at Nelder Grove. Issues that need to be addressed will be documented for future trail crew weekends.

Lewis Creek - tree removal
A small team is needed to help with removing several trees from the trail.We will need safety glasses or sturdy sunglasses, long sleeves/pants, work gloves, and boots. Only certified chainsaw sawyers will be using the chainsaw; chaps, chainsaw specific tools and saw will be brought by the crew leader. All other volunteers will be helping to carry tools, moving brush/branches, helping move pieces of the log, maintaining awareness of surroundings for safety, and traffic control to keep hikers out of the work area while the saw is operating.

Chainsaw Certification Course for Volunteers on the winter program
This is a free TWO DAY chainsaw course for volunteers who intend to help us clear snow machine and OHV trails. We will use USFS tools. If you have your own chaps, hard hat, ear and eye pro, saw - bring it.First day is classroom, second is practical.
For those who need overnight accommodations - there is a small campground at Kokanee work center where the second day will be held. Bring your water, the spigots are turned off for the winter.

Nelson Lake trail
There are a few trees left on Nelson Lake trail. Wayne and I will be going next weekend for a low key weekend. To attend, you should have registered as a volunteer via the Wilderness Corps website. There will be some paperwork to sign before we start out from the trailhead for those who have not reviewed and signed off on the Job Hazard Analysis for the year.
We work with hand tools in the wilderness, in this case a crosscut saw and axe. You will be asked to carry a tool.

Hobler Lake trail
Meeting time is fixed; ending time is variable depending upon how quickly we finish the work, which depends on how many volunteers are coming with us.There are still some trees left on the short side trail to Hobler Lake, and more along the trail beyond the lake. We made good progress on our first weekend out there.
We'll take the Tuatahi crosscut out for another visit and work some more on cutting trees out of the trail. Hobler is four miles from the trailhead. The final ~ 1/2 mile is the section currently being worked on. It's likely we will finish the work with one more weekend.

Hobler Lake Trail Clearing overnight
It was noted last year by a WIlderness Corps volunteer that the trail to Hobler Lake had multiple trees down and is close to the Maxon TH making it a favorite spot, as I can see from a quick google search. After checking with the Sierra National Forest, they have not cleared that trail in a while. When this happens, Wilderness Corps adds this trail to its list of trails that it keeps its eyes on. I need four volunteers to sign-up and go out there with a Wilderness Corps Crew Leader, and a Crosscut Saw to open the trail up, so it doesn't disappear forever. Canceled Nelson Lake trail clearing
It always takes multiple trips to clear all the trails in the Dinkey each year, even with the help of USFS Crews. We are going to plan on going in from the Cliff Lake Trailhead on this trip and clear from the junction with the Cliff Lake trail to Nelson Lake.We will take our Crosscut Saws and all of the gear required for these trips plus our overnight backpacks and head out in search of the first tree. This will be a straightforward out and back to Cliff Lake, clearing waterbars and trees along the trail. Volunteers will carry tools and take turns sawing, clearing, and swamping out. We will be going up to Kokanee Friday evening, get up bright and early in the morning, and go hike the Nellie Lake trail. Canceled Snow Park Cleanup Weekend
Following the big snowy winter, there will be a melt, followed by the revealing of much trash left behind by sno park users. To my knowledge there's not been a trash pickup - so I'm going to invite people to come help us recover the bits of plastic left behind. Lots of broken sleds, bottles, bags, and other trash lie scattered around in the forest. We'll be walking around off trail, off road, sometimes in steep areas (people slide down hills after all) looking for trash. Good hiking shoes or boots, work gloves, good sun protection, and long pants/sleeves would be appropriate PPE (protective personal equipment) for this outing.

USFS Chainsaw Training - Certification Class
A chainsaw certification is invaluable to have if you work as a volunteer in the Winter with Wilderness Corps or the SNF. We cut the downed trees out of the trail and do minor brushing on the Silent Sports Trails for the Winter Sports like Cross-country Skiing and snowshoeing. We also will be cutting Snowmobile Trails out by Mushroom Rock and around Kokanee. Schedule: 4 - Hours of Classroom 1 - day in the field cutting Day 1 Training will be at the High Sierra Ranger Station in Prather, CA and The field day will be held at Kokanee Work Center.
