Howdy folks! As a new airhead owner and ABC member, I am thrilled to be joining my first CO ABC meeting. I finally realized my childhood dream of getting a 1976 R90/6 and I can't wait to learn the ways of the wrench and start riding her. Thanks to Dick and Brook for their early support and advice so far. I look forward to meeting everyone.

@El Pescador: And we look forward to welcoming you to the insane asylum :-)

Sorry had to change to no, I'll be out of town. Have fun.

Looking forward to “Dick’s Day” on April 20th. I’ll be bringing a couple of sets of photos of Slash Fives that I and a friend have for sale. Mine’s a R60/5, my friend is selling his R75/5. Both are nice basic, sound old airheads....
Mar 26, 2019, 11:53 PM
Matt, would you bring a couple of pair of the shorting stick's please??? I have a friend in Kansas who wants a set.

@Radar41: Are looking for the spoke adapter that fits on the spark plug and plugs into the spark plug cap? If so, I have some.
Apr 3, 2019, 6:14 PM
Brook, Yep! That is exactly what I’m looking for!
Apr 3, 2019, 6:28 PM
@Radar41: Will do!!
Apr 3, 2019, 7:03 PM
@Brook Reams: if these will be on the for sale table, I will take a pair also. Mike z

@Mike Z: & @Radar41: I'll make up a bunch of them. I have a coffee can full of rusty spokes :-)

I’ll make a few sets too....
Apr 4, 2019, 8:33 AM
@Matthew Parkhouse:
I'm in for a set and looking forward to learning the shorting method
Apr 4, 2019, 2:49 PM
@Matthew Parkhouse: As you know, I'm a newbie in every single way. My 1976 R90/6 is in need of tuning, synchronizing and everything that comes with pulling a bike out of extended hibernation. I would be happy to volunteer my bike to use for a demonstration on this method if need be and I'd gladly pay for this "tool" to have in my quiver too. It would be interesting to compare methods and see how close one gets to the other. I have no idea what works best having no experience at all. Looking forward to this day!

Bring it to the tech day, there will be help available to make it purr!! @El Pescador:

Does any one have intake rocker arm for a 74 r60/6? And couple of the rocker arm needle bearings
Mike z
Mar 27, 2019, 10:12 PM
I bet I do.... I’ll bring them to the Tech Day or you could stop by here in Colorado Springs.....@Mike Z:
Mar 27, 2019, 10:24 PM
1974 r60/6 left intake is pitted on the valve facing side.
I did a search part 11 33 1 257 922 also seems to be used in The r75/6.
It is also the exhaust right side rocker.

I could also use the right side intake - it is beginning to show wear.

Would they have needle bearings also?

Which day can I come down? Would like to complete my project soon ?
April 3rd is not possible.

Good morning group, I was at EME yesterday, chatting with Norman and suggested he come by Dick's Tech Day for an hour or so to meet some of the local Airheads. He said he would think about it. SO if any of you chat with him please invite him to come by. It would be good for him to meet some of his customers. :).

Follow up: Had an email from Norman, He is going to try and stop by for a bit to meet some of his customers. For those of you who are not familiar with Euromotoelectric (EME) the have a lot of parts for our airheads, and are good folks to deal with!!

Hello Everyone, Look forward to meeting everyone!
This will also be my first CO Airhead Tech day. Over the last 15 years of having my 1988 R100 RS have included a great deal of travel that took me away from the area. In large part because I was living in NM most of the time. Since buying my RS, I have logged ~75,000 wonderful miles. Whether commuting or touring around the West, I have enjoyed it tremendously. It is also a bike that I have maintained myself with occasional help from Matt Parkhouse and a couple of guys from the NM - LOEBMWR. As we read this, it has

In addition to learning the ways of the wrench from all of you seasoned Airheads and getting my 1976 R90/6 tuned, synced, points and plugs in good order, and maybe a tutorial on a spline lube, I would like to put on a set of luggage racks/loops. I have a set that I acquired for the bike that were promised to fit but I don't think they were actually meant for that year/model. It sounds stupid but I may need help evaluating that. If anyone does have a set in good shape that would fit this bike, I might be interested in buying them and then I can sell these but it might help to know exactly what bike they were meant for so I don't put another Airhead in my situation with racks that don't fit and a couple hundred pesos poorer. - John Gale

I am new to this group and looking to gain knowledge and while I'm at it a few riding buddies. My 1976 R75/6 is in good shape but because it has over 100K miles it will require me to keep up on maintenance so I can ride it for another 100K! I have logged 1,700 miles on it to a trip to the UP from Iowa last summer. My father and I have a trip to Utah at the end of May. Since my father trailed my bike from Iowa to CO last fall I have noticed the idle it low; does this have to do with the elevation out here? Also, I am looking to possibly add a windshield but will want advice if anybody has any?!-)))) Looking forward to the 20th!
Apr 4, 2019, 6:18 PM
Jason, I would recommend a major tune up, which includes: all fluid changes, new points, condenser, spark plugs, point adj. valve adj., timing and carb sync. Assuming it tunes well with no carb “issues” - you should then be ready for Utah. Matt is going to be there and he IS “Lord of the Bings”! :-).
Apr 5, 2019, 2:24 PM Edited Edited on Apr 5, 2019, 2:27 PM
@Radar41: It just had a major tune up: all fluids changed, no point due to a newer electronic ignition, valve's adjusted, timing and carb sync have also been done. Other than the idle the bike is in tip top shape however as I said before; I would like to learn how to do anything that may/will need to be done on my bike in the future.

My slash five has an electrical issue that perhaps someone can shed some light on. No PUN intended. With the key in the on position the charge light, oil pressure light and neutral light all are on. No turn signals, horn, starter actuation or brake lights. Place the switch in either the headlamp or parking lamp position and everything works as normal. Starts right up and everything functions normally. I will also add that the parking lamp remains on when the headlamp is on. I've pretty much exhausted my skills and have worn a whole in the page looking at wiring diagram in the Haynes manual trying to figure this out. I'm planning to ride it to the tech day in case anyone has some thoughts or ideas. Thanks, Jim.

Jim, I’m bringing wiring diagrams and my Fluke, plus Matt will be there one of us can help.
Apr 10, 2019, 1:57 PM
@jimslash5: Jim, What year is your /5? The early ones have no fuse, the later (1973) have a fuse. That affects "what goes where" in the wiring.
Apr 10, 2019, 3:56 PM
I’ve been living with Slash Five electrics since 1972....
I’ll bring my best tool (a test light). My best guess from afar - something in the fuse circuit.....

This will be my first meeting with the CO Airheads. I inherited 2 vintage BMWs and had them shipped to Colorado. Both were my Dad's. I haven't tried to start either of them yet. I plan to bring them both - a 72 R75/5 (blue toaster) and a 64 R50/2 (a bit rough looking, but my brother had it running about 5 years ago). Hoping to get some help with an initial assessment and get this running and cleaned up. I'd like to do a full restoration on the R50, so could use some help thinking about that plan. Pictures of the bikes are in the tech day pictures link. See you soon.

Austin,

Opinion? Opinion? Really you ask us for an opinion on restoring an airhead?? Might as well start a tire or oil thread!!

Seriously, we will be glad to help!! ;-)

Awesome pair of bikes!! . Brook Reams restoration shop site has a good outline of the assessment process, must do items, nice to do , budget approach. Post your schedule, offer coffee and watch the airheads assemble to help. Looks like a significant but satisfing project.

My slash five is an April 73 build so it does have fuses. All the fuses check out and I'll run some preliminary tests using my home made test light as well. The tach is currently at Wirespokes for repair so there is a nice void in the shell. I've also got a cheap endoscope that I'll drag along so we can peek into those neck turning spaces. One additional bit of info is that when buttoning up the shell the speedo cable bumped up against the switch where the hot lead (the red lead) attaches to the switch board. Looking into the shell it's the left front corner of the switch. It did spark so I suspect that perhaps that clue will make things clearer. After being so careful about removing the ground while working on anything electrical I button everything up and attempt to put the grommet around the speedo cable in the headlight housing and apparently screwed something up. See everyone on the 20th.

After a number of hours going over the wiring diagram for my slash five I believe I located the issue and it is once again running as usual. I may not be smart but I am persistent. Looking forward to the 20th. Jim.

@jimslash5: One down and only 62 more electrical problems to solve at Tech Day. :-)

After being absent the last 2 years, my health has improved, and I look forward to renewing friendships and meeting the new members.

@Tim Balough: be good to see you Tim!

Anyone have any recommendations on a good wheel chock for a trailer and/or bike lift? I need one for my trailer and I'm thinking of buying a cheap lift but it needs a good chock on it. The strange contraption it actually comes with looks more like what you'd find on a medieval torture table. Look forward to meeting everyone this weekend!
Apr 16, 2019, 6:13 AM
I use one on my HF lift from HF, works well for me.
Apr 16, 2019, 2:05 PM
Could those of you who contributed photos get ahold of me. I’d like to use a few in the next “Keep ‘em Flying” column. They have to be high-resolution - lots of pixels...
Thanks, Matt

Dick, Thanks for hosting the event. Great group!!!
This was my first Tech Day since I moved back to Colorado. This “old cowboy” learned some new tricks.

You may have noticed the Colorado Airheads BMW tee shirts some of us were wearing at the Tech Day. One of our members, Chris, took the trouble to have these designed and made for our group. How COOOOL is that!!!!

If you wish to "fly the flag" of the CO-ABC, here are the details about how to order yours.
